Where To Find Free Home Care In Massachusetts

The best things in life are free, and that includes home care services, too. Here’s where you can find free home care in Massachusetts for yourself or a loved one.

Did you know that the Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs provides free or subsidized home care?

Together with 27 local Aging Services Access Points (ASAPS), the Massachusetts EOEA provides home care services to 45,000 elders each month.

Of course, subsidies are determined based on income level. However, unlike Medicaid, assets such as savings or property do not determine eligibility.

For example, in 2015, the income threshold was $26,561 or under for a single person and $37,581 for a couple. However, even if your earnings exceed these levels, it’s worth calling to see what income qualifies.

Moreover, MassHealth members are financially eligible. However, the income limits rise yearly by the Social Security cost of living allowance. For details on income levels and co-payment amounts, visit MassGov.

The ASAPs provide case management, assess individual needs and program eligibility. Additionally, these organizations contract with other agencies to offer many services for seniors over 60, individuals under 60 diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, and caregivers needing respite services.

What Types Of Care Are Available?

The ASAP program provides services based on functional impairment levels and critical unmet needs, such as:

  • Homemaker
  • Companion
  • Personal care aid
  • Supportive home care aides
  • Home health aid

In addition, these providers help with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as:

  • Housework
  • Transportation
  • Home-delivered meals
  • Grocery shopping and delivery
  • Medication dispersal
  • Bathing, toileting, and continence
  • Dressing and grooming
  • Eating and meal preparation
  • Mobility and transferring

The program funds multiple programs, such as supportive adult day care, dementia care, day health programs, and respite care for family caregivers. Furthermore, your local ASAP also offers:

  • A personal emergency response
  • Wanderer locator
  • Adaptive housing or equipment
  • Vision rehabilitation
  • Behavioral health counseling
  • Emergency shelter
